Building on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted at the UN Summit in New York in September 2015. This agenda contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to achieve ecological, social and economic sustainability in equal measure and apply to both industrialized nations and developing and emerging countries. The 17 goals do not stand alone, but are linked by a variety of interactions.
All member states have committed to implementing the SDGs at national, regional and international level by 2030. In Austria, all federal ministries were mandated to implement the 2030 Agenda in a coherent manner by a Council of Ministers decision on January 12, 2016. Austria plans to present its national implementation report in 2020 to the UN High-level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York.
